Panasonic Lumix s 24-105mm F4 Macro O.I.S.

I have the Sigma FP for a few months now. The little camera body is great, it just does not have in body stabilisation. I am spoiled by the Olympus OMD series and the Leica SL2 with IBIS. In search for an optical image stabilised (O.I.S.) lens, I thought the all rounded Lumix 24-105 will suit my need.

Body Design and Built Quality

Like the Lumix S Pro 50mm (reviewed here), the Lumix S 24-105 is built well. It is lighter than the 50mm, about the same bulk. Zoom and focus rings are rubberised. They feel good but they are dust collectors. The lock switch is handy to keep lens not extended on transit. AF/MF switch is good for my video use. The key reason I acquire this lens is for O.I.S. stabilised photos and videos with the bottom switch.

  • good 24-105mm zoom range
  • macro closeup ability 0.5x magnification 0.3m minimum focal distance at the 105mm end.
  • O.I.S. switch
  • manual focus switch
  • weatherproof seals

Image Quality

All my photos are shot as F4. This lens is sharp enough, edge to edge. The is no flaw on the 24mp Sigma FP. Even on the Leica SL2 47mp sensor, it is performing well, and itcan also take advantage of the In-Body-Image-Stablisation as Dual O.I.S. just like on the Lumi x S cameras.

The colours are very nice. Vibrant and saturated. Out of focus bokeh is ok.

The close focus distance do bring the image to life. There is a three dimensional look to the images created with this lens. It is supposed to be a kit lens to the Lumix S system, but it is better than expected.

It is very stable for the full zoom in range, as well as for night-time use. I can confidently handheld the Lumix 24-105mm with the FP with very limited light, and that is very useful. this combo render nice contrasty details and I get sun stars even at F4.
